Route 78 Rockfall Mitigation
Location:
Hunterdon County, New Jersey
Owner:
New Jersey Department of Transportation
Year Completed:
2023
In response to rockfall hazards and risks on those highways containing rock-cut slopes, the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) created the Rockfall Mitigation Program. The program is a multi-year program for funding the design and construction of these projects.
The projects usually incorporate a high-priority slope with one or more moderately prioritized slopes for the purposes of cost-efficiency, geographic nearness, the similarity of mitigation measures, or minimization of the recurrence of traffic impacts in a local community. The NJDOT recognized the Jugtown Mountain section of Route 78 located in Bethlehem Township as one of the high-priority slopes.
Ferreira is the prime contractor and is responsible for the rock slope stabilization and removal of the west and eastbound lanes, the stabilization of shotcrete, drainage work, asphalt paving of concrete curbs, and landscaping.
