(JID) Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area Living Shoreline

Location:
Jupiter, Florida

Owner:
Jupiter Inlet District

Year Completed:
2021

The Jupiter Inlet District made the decision to construct a living shoreline at the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area (JILONA) in an effort to preserve and protect the rapidly eroding shoreline. Ferreira Southern was the prime contractor on this project and was contracted to install 338 tons of detached shoreline of parallel breakwaters to create a safe harbor for fishing vessels and protect it from sea swells and waves. This structure provided a living vegetation shoreline while maintaining environmental monitoring and turbidity control. Ferreira Southern also constructed a timber pier with mesh for spectacular inlet and lighthouse viewing.  A breakwater is a human-made structure built out into the sea with the purpose of creating a safe harbor, marina, or anchorage for fishing vessels and protecting the coast from powerful swells and waves.
